Regular medical checks for benefits
Iain Duncan Smith’s Welfare Reform Bill, published today, lays out plans to reform the welfare state. Measures include regular medical checks for those claiming disability benefits, and replacing most existing benefits with a Universal Credit system.

Housing benefit penalty dropped
The government has dropped plans to impose a 10% cut in housing benefit on anyone claiming Jobseekers Allowance for more than a year. The cut was proposed in the emergency budget in June, but does not feature in the Welfare Reform Bill published today.

£1.5m research boost

Award for M.E. documentary makers
Yeovil-based media company GRACE Productions won the Broadcast TV prize at the Medical Journalists’ Association Winter Awards 2011 for its documentary I helped my daughter die, which followed the story of Lynn Gilderdale, who had M.E., and her mother Kay, who was charged with attempted murder after Lynn’s assisted suicide.
