Work and Pensions Secretary announces plans for out-of-work benefits and tax credits

30 July 2010

Secretary Iain Duncan Smith has put forward three options to be considered by the Department for Work and Pensions to make work pay.

One idea is that all out-of-work benefits and tax credits could be scrapped and replaced with a single payment as part of a radical shake-up of the welfare system.

The objective is to improve the quality of life for the worst off in society and get those at the bottom end back into work.

Action for M.E. will respond to the DWP consultation.

Action for M.E. will also continue to keep a close watch on developments and look for opportunities to influence decision-makers in relation to back-to-work incentives. In particular we need to ensure that ill, vulnerable people are not forced into work if they are not able.

People with M.E. have also told us that they would like better flexibility in being able to access limited amounts of work without losing benefits.
