Applied for ESA? Please complete our survey

7 May 2012

Action for M.E. is collecting data from people with M.E. who have applied for Employment and Support Allowance in the last 12 months.

If this includes you, please complete our survey.

More than 200 people with M.E. participated in a similar survey in 2010. Results showed that the Work Capability Assessment (WCA), the face-to-face assessment for ESA, was not suitable for testing fluctuating conditions such as M.E.

This was reiterated in Professor Malcolm Harrington’s independent review of the WCA in November 2011, which recommended that “fluctuating conditions descriptors” should be used to assess people with long-term conditions in order to avoid a “snapshot” assessment.

Action for M.E. is trying to find out how the ESA assessment process has improved – or not – since then for people with M.E.

If you would prefer a paper copy of the survey, please email our Policy Officer Tristana Rodriguez and one will be posted to you.

The deadline for surveys to be completed is Friday 22 June.

Regarding ESA Survey
Dear Angela,

We are sorry to hear that you felt our research was ambiguous. The survey is based on the survey we already carried out in 2010. Therefore, the clarity has been tested out. Moreover, the exact reason why we ask people to take this survey is to inform the fluctuating condition of M.E., which often do not get recognised.
We appreciate your feedback and this will be considered for more of future surveys. We always welcome constructive comments and feedback regarding our work. If you have any other feedback, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you very much.

ESA survey
Dear Angela,

I'm sorry to hear that you felt that way about our survey. The survey is based on the one that we carried out in 2010. Therefore, we thought it was examined carefully. We appreciate your feedback. I hope you could still finish the survey for us. If you have any other comments or feedback regarding the survey, please do not hesitate to let us know. Thank you very much.

Your sincerely,
Tristana, Policy officer

ESA Survey
I have just tried to participate in the online ESA survey having just completed one however on reading the first question, I don't feel able to continue further. The reason for this is the ambiguity of the question. I suffer from light and noise sensitivity but the question aligns itself to those who only get this if you are unable to wash yourself or leave the house. Yes it is true that I suffer from these but as my condition fluctuates, sometimes I suffer from light and noise sensitivity, sometimes I am too ill to leave the house and sometimes I cannot get out of bed to wash myself. However on the plus side, yes sometimes I can make a drink and wash myself and try and be independent so maybe before sending out a questionnaire, more thought needs to be put into the questions.
