Challenging council's Blue Badge policy

10 November 2011

Action for M.E.has learnt that Greenwich Council is withholding Blue Badges from people with M.E.

Sir Peter Spencer, Chief Executive, Action for M.E., has written to Mary Ney, Chief Executive, Greenwich Council, pointing out that this policy contravenes the Equality Act 2010 and asking that it be rectified immediately.

In his letter, Sir Peter also draws attention to Greenwich Council’s Disability Equality Scheme 2011-2014 , which states: “We aim to ensure that disabled people living or working in Greenwich are treated equally and have the same opportunities as everyone else.”

However, the eligibility criteria on page six of Greenwich Council’s Blue Badge Scheme application form says: “You will not qualify for a blue badge for the following medical condition: Asthma, Autism, psychological or behavioural problems, Crohns disease, Incontinence or Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME).”
