Following a meeting of the Forward M.E. group with Lord Freud, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, on 26 October, the Countess of Mar, Chair of the group, received a letter from Lord Freud.
The purpose of the letter was to respond to questions raised in the meeting that had not been answered due to time constraints. The main point addressed was how the Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessment would work for people with M.E.
In the letter Lord Freud states “we recognise the challenge of assessing individuals with M.E. and we want to ensure that the outcomes are fair, objective and evidence based. It is precisely because we want to get this right that we identified M.E. as one of the key impairment groups to focus on as part of our summer testing.”
Lord Freud also stated that although the PIP assessment will operate very differently from the Work Capability Assessment (WCA), there were things to learn from the WCA and Professor Harrington’s review.
