Abstract

XMRV or xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related retrovirus, a recently discovered retrovirus, has been linked to both prostate cancer and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). Recently, the teams of Drs. Shyh-Ching Lo and Harvey Alter discovered the presence of sequences closely related to XMRV in the blood of 86.5% of patients with CFS [1]. These findings are important because since the initial discovery of XMRV in CFS, several studies have failed to find XMRV in specimens collected from CFS patients. While the current study also did not find XMRV in CFS, Lo et al. did detect sequences that belong to polytropic mouse endogenous retroviruses (PMV), which share considerable similarity with XMRV. Criteria for future studies that will help bring greater clarity to the issue of retroviral sequences in CFS are proposed below.

Retro viral links??
Despite the false trail and shattered hopes of the mouse debacle- I still strongly suspect a retro-viral like pathogen- may be a factor in the manifestation of full blown ME. Having suffered it for some and worked with many who have HIV/AIDS and / or Hep C - the similarities are often uncanny . I'm not comparing ME with full blown aids but only that a similar retro viral pathogen may be involved. Sadly very little research funding is expended on ME and what little there is tends to focus on younger users who seem more likely to progress to partial or full recovery than those, like myself who manifest it later in life.. The reason why no pathogen has been identified as of yet/ Quite possibly is simply down to £$£$£$£$£$£$£, ME doesn't have the star pulling power that HIV/AIds has , nor does it yet impact so manifestly on the lives of so many people . But I'd bet a golden dollar or soveriegn that something is hiding within our gene sequence etc, that given optimum conditions - can hi-jack the body's DNA etc and use it for it's own purposes.. Time will tell. Sadly I suspect I'll be dead and dust before we find the true pathology and pathogenesis of ME .
