Fluctuating conditions difficult to assess

Sir Peter Spencer, Chief Executive of Action for M.E., has commented on figures published yesterday by the Department of Work and Pensions showing that 57 per cent of people who go through the Work Capability Assessment are found fit for some form of work.

Sir Peter said: “These figures must be considered in the light of the Government’s independent review, led by Professor Malcolm Harrington. This acknowledged that fluctuating conditions such as M.E. are difficult to assess and that there is much to be done to make the current system fairer.

“Our research shows that the Work Capability Assessment is not fit for purpose and that assessors contracted by the DWP frequently disregard evidence from claimants’ own doctors.”

Action for M.E. has called on the Government to implement Professor Harrington’s recommendations and to remind assessors that not all claimants are fraudsters. Many are vulnerable people in genuine need.
