The UK government has produced national guidance, Fair access to care services, which categorises need on the basis of the level of risk to a person’s health, safety or independence if their needs aren’t met.
However, each local authority currently has its own eligibility criteria.
Contact your local social services or social work department to find out more about their assessment arrangements.
They should publish information which tells you who is eligible for an assessment, how to apply, what needs the local authority can meet in people who are eligible, how the assessor will decide if you are eligible and how long you will have to wait for an assessment.
