Gift aid explained

Gift Aid allows you to maximise the value of your donations, at no cost to you.

If you’re a UK tax payer and you tell us we can claim Gift Aid on your donation, Action for M.E. can claim 25p per £1 donated. So if you make a donation of £10, we would be able to claim back £2.50 from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

If you haven’t already declared your gift aid status to us, download a form. We will be able to claim gift aid on all eligible donations as far back as four years ago.

Higher tax payers

If you are a higher rate tax payer, you can benefit from tax relief on your donation.

You can claim back the difference between the higher rate of tax at 40% and the basic rate at 20% - a total of 20%. So if £1 was donated, the gross donation to charity is £1.25 and you will be able to claim 25 pence back (20% of £1.25).

How Gift Aid is calculated

In case you're curious, the calculation is:

(donation) x 20 (basic rate of tax)
80 (100 - basic rate of tax)
