This afternoon the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on M.E. is hosting a policy roundtable as part of the inquiry into the shocking lack of social care provision for people with M.E.
The session will be chaired by Daniel Zeichner MP, and will draw on the expertise of health, advocacy and social care professionals, policy influencers, and people affected by M.E.
During the roundtable discussion, we will seek to explore how to improve access to appropriate social care for people with M.E., asking how we can:
The policy roundtable follows on from our interim Close to collapse report, which examined the accounts of 850 people with M.E. The report found that while 97% of people with M.E. experienced two or more difficulties with daily living activities, entitling them to social care under the Care Act 2014, only 16% of these people had received social care assessments, and only 6% of these had been awarded a care package.
Following the policy roundtable we will explore how best to implement the recommendations. A report will then be published this summer.
There will also be an awareness-raising drop-in session for MPs during M.E. Awareness Month, on Wednesday 11 May. This event offers MPs the opportunity to better understand the key issues facing people with M.E. – please encourage your MP to attend using our template letter.
