NICE guideline development committee update
November 13, 2018
Action for M.E. welcome the appointment of Dr William Weir to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline development committee. Dr Weir is currently the Medical Advisor for Hope for M.E. & Firbo Northern Ireland and is an active member of Forward M.E. We believe he will be a positive addition to the committee and that this is a step in the right direction by NICE.
In addition to this appointment, Dr Charles Shepherd has been appointed to a co-opted member which will enable him to attend meetings and take part in the discussions. Expert witnesses have also been approved in the form of Dr Jonathan Edwards, a Professor at University College London who has lead research into treatment, and Greg Crowhurst, a nurse and activist who cares for his wife who has severe M.E. We believe that listening to the first-hand experience of these experts, and that of the lay members, will be crucial in ensuring that the new guideline is fit for purpose and patient led.
We are continuing to look for ways to engage with NICE and the committee members to understand their views.
