Welfare debate: Let us contact your MP
October 16, 2018
We want you to have your say – we can share the welfare benefit issues that matter to you with your MP.
Thanks to the War on Welfare petition, a debate has been secured at the House of Commons next week on Universal Credit, the new monthly payment which will replace Child Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, Job Seekers Allowance, Employment Support Allowance and Working Tax Credits.
Our Welfare Team receive hundreds of calls each month from people with M.E. who are struggling to claim Universal Credit or who have had their benefits stopped. We want to write to your MP to raise these issues and show how they affect people with M.E. in their constituency. If you would like us to do this for you, then please email our Policy and Engagement Officer, Sam Bromiley with:
- Your name
- Your address (including postcode)
- A couple of sentences on how your condition affects you
- Your experience of claiming benefits (in brief – what impact has this had on you?)
This is really important as MPs receive hundreds of template letters each week so we want to personalise how we contact them by sharing your story. We will then send this off on your behalf to your MP, along with information on M.E., requesting they attend the debate and raise these experiences.
The more MPs we can contact on behalf of constituents, the more chance M.E. will be taken into consideration in the debate. Your MP may want to write to you in response to being contacted and we would be grateful if you could share their response with us so we can follow up with a meeting if needed.
