What you need to know about Winter Fuel payments

January 30, 2019

Are you born on or before 5 November 1953? You may be entitled to a Winter Fuel payment.

What is it?

A Winter Fuel payment is a one-off, tax-free payment of between £100 and £300 that you can receive during winter to help with heating costs and is received by households with someone over the Pension Credit age.

The amount household receives varies according to personal circumstances e.g. your age or other people living with you who are also eligible can affect the amount you receive.

This payment does not count as income when working out your entitlement to other benefits.

How do I apply?

Most people do not need to make a claim for a Winter Fuel Payment. You’re usually paid automatically if you are getting other benefits. However, if you are not getting other benefits and you did not get a payment last winter, you must make a claim.

The deadline to receive this payment for the winter of 2018/9 is March 2019.
