Hammers Heroes National Three Peaks charity challenge

4 April 2024

On Saturday 11 May, and finishing on World ME Day, a courageous team of Hammers will be attempting to conquer the National Three Peaks Challenge whilst also attempting to raise a collective total of £150,000 for Action for ME, the West Ham United Foundation, and LTSB.

Joseph Lyons, CEO of the West Ham United Foundation, leads the Action for M.E. team and is joined by his close friend Sav. The wider group also includes a WHUF team featuring Marlon Harewood, ex-West Ham United Footballer.

The Three Peaks Challenge entails scaling the highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis), England (Scafell Pike), and Wales (Snowdon) in only 24 hours. The entire expedition covers over 23 and a staggering 3,064 meters of vertical ascent, compounded by 450 miles of driving between peaks.

However, the group are up for the challenge, all drawing motivation from the impactful work of the three charities they are supporting.

"None of us have ever taken this on before and it's safe to say we are daunted at the prospect of what lies ahead but feel motivated by knowing what a difference we could make to the three causes."

For Lyons in particular, these causes are held particularly close to his heart

"I've worked with LTSB for over a decade and know their team and their impact very well, and I've got a personal relationship with Action for ME as my wife, Kate, was diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis a few years ago.

So, for me, when a Three Peaks Challenge got mentioned at events involving Action for M.E. and LTSB, I was moved to bring a group together and take this on.

Everyone has their own reasons for being involved and their own ties to the causes but ultimately, we're doing this as a team."

All of us here at Action for ME truly honoured to be part of such an ambitious challenge for three fantastic causes and wish everyone involved the best of luck!
