Luke Akehurst MP joins Action for ME’s Parliamentary Champions network!

29 July 2026

We are delighted to announce that Luke Akehurst MP has joined our Parliamentary Champions network!

Luke Akehurst is an MP for North Durham.

Speaking on joining our network, Luke said:

After hearing from constituents affected by ME and Long Covid, I have been struck by the serious impact these illnesses can have on people’s lives, as well as the barriers many people face in accessing timely diagnosis, specialist care and appropriate support.

ME remains too poorly understood, despite its significant personal and economic impact. Too many people continue to face a postcode lottery in services, and it is clear that more must be done to improve care pathways, strengthen research and ensure fluctuating illnesses such as ME are properly recognised.

That is why I am pleased to support Action for ME as a Parliamentary Champion, and I look forward to working with the charity to raise these issues in Parliament and support better outcomes for people with ME.”

Our network of Parliamentary Champions are our 'go-to' individuals when engaging with Government and building support for our campaigns more broadly in Parliament and beyond.

They help us in a number of ways, including:

·      Tabling written and oral questions on ME

·      Tabling and supporting debates on ME

·      Sponsoring events in Parliament.

·      Writing opinion pieces for national and local press.
